Nintendo announced it would have a new Direct today (a livestream in which the company shares announcements and information about upcoming games) just yesterday, Tuesday, March 31, giving me only a day to emotionally prepare myself for what was to come. And, like always, there was a lot to be emotionally prepared for. Get ready for a list of all the news announced and my reactions.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U updates

The news: Lots of DLC for these games were announced, including Mewtwo from Pokemon and Lucas from Mother 3 as fighters, new costumes for Mii fighters, you can vote for what character you would like to see added to the game and that more Smash amiibo will be coming soon.

Reactions: Obviously, I love these games, so I’m very happy that Nintendo is still focusing on it and releasing DLC instead of releasing it and running to the next project without a second thought. I will receive a free download code for Mewtwo because of a Club Nintendo offer for registering both versions of the game, so I’m excited for him to come out, and I’m also happy for all the Earthbound fans to have Lucas back in the action. The costumes for the Mii characters are cute and come at reasonable prices, and seeing as I’ve fallen in love with Majora’s Mask 3D, I will definitely be getting the Link and Majora’s Mask costumes. As far as upcoming amiibo go, I am keeping as up-to-date as possible in order to make sure I can get a Lucina before she sells out (because she is one of my favorite fictional characters ever), and I’m very excited to see that they’ve announced a Palutena amiibo because she is my main in the game (and also an actual goddess). The Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot is an amazing idea and I love that Nintendo decided to do it. I, personally, want to see Professor Layton win because he is the title character of one of the longest-running successful Nintendo series without a representative in Smash. If you have some free time, vote for him for me (or choose your own favorite, if you must) here.

Nintendo eshop additions

The news: Nintendo 64 and DS games will be added to the eshop and plenty of new indie games will be hitting the shop as well.

Reactions: I’m very happy about old classics hitting the eshop. Older Nintendo games have become out-of-print classics, so getting a physical copy of one can involve lots of searching and quite a bit of money. Putting more older games on the shop will help both the company and fans. Hopefully some of my DS favorites, like 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors, Touch Detective and the original Professor Layton games will hit the shop so I can persuade my friends to play them (as you can tell, I like puzzle and mystery games a lot).

Game updates for the regulars

The news: Nintendo showed off Mario Maker, Yoshi’s Woolly World is adorable and will get a yarn amiibo that I must own, an amiibo-based Wii U game will showcase Nintendo classics, Splatoon will have different modes and be released alongside some cool quest-granting amiibo, Code Name: STEAM will get an update soon, Puzzle & Dragons Z and Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition will get a demo soon, two games will be added to the StreetPass Plaza and Fatal Frame Wii U is coming to North America in the fall.

Reactions: Mario and all the spinoff games his series has inspired are not my favorite Nintendo franchise, so most of this news didn’t affect me much. That yarn Yoshi amiibo, however, is very adorable, and I will get it even though I don’t plan on buying Yoshi’s Woolly World. I’m still unsure if I want Splatoon (mainly because I don’t have enough friends with a Wii U for a multiplayer game to be worth the price, despite the cute art and fun concept) or Code Name: STEAM (which I wasn’t going to get until Fire Emblem characters could guest star, which caught my interest as someone who cares too much about Fire Emblem). Fatal Frame Wii U might be a good chance for me to get back into the survival horror scene, but it is too early to tell.

Not one, but TWO Fire Emblem games

The news: Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, the crossover we haven’t heard about basically since its announcement in 2013, is still alive and well and even has a trailer, and Fire Emblem 14 also has a new trailer and plot details.

Reactions: I know I’ve mentioned it in previous blogs, but Fire Emblem: Awakening is one of my favorite games of all time. So to see all this publicity for Fire Emblem games was awesome. I would’ve liked to have seen more of the Fire Emblem half of the crossover in the SMT X FE trailer, but a trailer at all is good enough for me, considering many thought development might have been dropped entirely since we haven’t heard anything about it in forever. On the Fire Emblem 14 front, the new trailer secured my theory about the game’s plot: two countries are at war, and you, the customizable main character, must pick which side to support. The character designs look gorgeous, being able to customize my own unit is something I loved about the previous game and the combat system has new improvements as seen in the trailer. I’m also very excited that there’s a meaningful choice in the game, and I hope it works out as well in the actual game as it does in theory.

Animal Crossing spin-off and more clever ways to empty my wallet

The news: Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer will be a game set in the Animal Crossing universe, but instead of living in a town, you will help design villagers’ towns to fit their requests. This game will use cards that act like amiibo. Also, an NFC reader will be released at the same time so that someone who owns a 3DS instead of a New 3DS (which have a built-in NFC reader) can use amiibo with their games.

Reactions: This is the first time Animal Crossing has made a game outside of their main series, which is surprising. The game looks absolutely adorable though, and as I longtime fan, I am sure that I will end up getting it. I’m also very happy that I can get an NFC reader because I have an amiibo collection but not a New 3DS, and it would be annoying to get a whole new system just to be able to have them be compatible with my handheld. I love my pink 3DS XL and I hope it stays with me for as long as possible (aka until a Fire Emblem 14 edition of the New 3DS is announced, if that even happens).

Mario Kart 8 DLC

The news: Nintendo reminds me that I should’ve gotten Mario Kart 8 by now by announcing their second DLC pack, which will introduce Animal Crossing-themed racers, tracks and vehicles. A new 200cc option will be added to the game for those with a need for speed.

Reactions: I really need to get this game. The graphics are amazing, I love racing games, the Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing DLC packs are both right up my alley and I need to expand my Wii U inventory anyway. This game will be next on my list.

Thanks for sticking with me through another long rant. Hopefully, money will rain from the sky onto me so I can afford all of this. I’m assuming it won’t, so here’s to saving up and long waits.
