Blog: My newest musical obsession

I have made many musical discoveries thanks to Pandora. Most recently, I found an amazing electronic duo called The Cinema. Comprised of lead singer Leighton Antelman (lead singer of the alternative rock band Lydia, whose music I would also recommend) and producer Matt Malpass (producer for Lydia), The Cinema released their debut album, “My Blood is Full of Airplanes,” in 2011. After hearing their song “Satellites,” I had one thought and one thought only: where have these people been my whole life?

Although Antelman and Malpass merely intended to make a few songs that will evoke emotion from someone, they did much more. Antelman’s light, airy vocals and Malpass’ instrumentation reminiscent of The Postal Service and Phoenix work together to create a nearly euphoric sound that any fan of electronic music will enjoy. The duo shows a more upbeat sound on tracks like “Kill It” and “The Wolf.” Songs like “My Blood is Full of Airplanes” show them as more relaxed, but the chorus and bridge still feature powerhouse vocals and strong instrumentation.

Although it is uncertain whether Antelman and Malpass will create more music together, I’m keeping my fingers crossed. The Cinema brought a new sound to the world of alternative electronic music, and I’m curious to see what further work they can accomplish.
