The other day, sophomore Tori Aerni and sophomore Karissa Schmidt introduced me to an amazing band called AJR. Ever since I found out about them, I’ve been hooked. Composed of brothers Adam, Jack and Ryan Met (the band name is an acronym for their first names), AJR was originally known for their YouTube covers of popular songs, some of which they mashed up with older music. A few months ago they released their first original single, “I’m Ready.”

I love AJR for many reasons. First off, all three members have amazing voices. Ryan’s lower vocals and unique tone are always nice to hear, Adam’s softer voice provides contrast between the others’ and Jack’s voice is just downright angelic. Also, the band is able to make multiple sounds cohesive. With songs like “I’m Ready” and “Livin’ On Love,” they blend electronic sounds with a pop beat and vocals. They show a more acoustic side in songs like “Infinity” and “Growing Old On Bleecker Street,” the latter of which even incorporates a ukulele. And in “The World Is A Marble Heart” (my personal favorite), the band taps into an alternative sound, while still keeping the track somewhat electronic (think Florence + the Machine meets David Guetta). Throughout all these songs they still keep their older influences, with some vocal melodies even reminiscent of barber shop quartets. All of their work is independent too, and every one of their songs is recorded in the living room of their apartment.

I’m really looking forward to great things from AJR. Their debut original album is slated to be released independently some time in 2014. Until then, I’ll be listening to their other songs and covers and patiently waiting.
