Bandwagon sports fans aggravating to diehards

Sports fans need to stay dedicated to teams in both good and bad situations

We all know someone who is a diehard fan of some kind of sport.  Diehard Chiefs fans, Royals fans, Sporting Kansas City fans, Oklahoma City Thunder fans, the list goes on and on.  But at the same time, all of us know someone who is known for hopping on bandwagons when it comes to sports.

These species of humans are known as bandwagon fans.  Bandwagon fans are the opposite of lifelong sports fans; they’re fans that only favor teams that are having a winning season.  Although they mean no harm, they can be pretty aggravating.

As a diehard Chiefs and Royals fan myself, bandwagon fans are pretty annoying to deal with.  Especially since I, as well as many others, have been a Chiefs and Royals fan even when both Kansas City teams weren’t doing so hot.

In the 2013 World Series, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox faced off in an epic battle to win the seven game series.  All the baseball fans in America were pressured to pick a side to support during this iconic sporting event.  The whole concept of picking a side became extremely annoying when certain people began insisting that they have been a Red Sox fan their entire life, when just a few months prior they were supposedly a diehard Royals fan.  It’s fine to pick a side for an event, but when claiming lifelong loyalty, it becomes very irritating to people who actually have been lifelong fans.

Sure it might be easier, and a lot more fun, to follow and support teams who are doing well, but you have to have loyalty.  Let’s put it this way, you wouldn’t support Mill Valley’s football program for a season and then at the first loss decide to support De Soto’s program would you? No, of course not. It’s the same thing with college and professional sports teams. Choose a team and stick with it, no matter what.
