In light of the first football game of the season, administration wants to remind students and community members that school rules and KSHAA regulations still apply at all sporting events. Banned items include: backpacks, duffel bags, baby powder, outside food/drink and drones.

According to associate principal Jerald VanRheen, the school and district have always had certain banned items, but added new ones to the list as a safety precaution.

“We have always had no outside food or drink. Last year we had trouble with students bringing those items in using backpacks, so this year we, along with the district, ask that no backpacks and bags be brought in,” VanRheen said. “The idea is that we want our games to be attended, but we want it to be safe for everybody.”

As a follow-up to issues related to baby powder last year, administrators have added it to the banned items list too.

“Baby powder looks really cool when students throw it, but there are also respiratory issues and when that baby powder hits the aluminum bleachers it makes them slick,” VanRheen said. “So, we’re asking that students refrain from bringing baby powder as well.”

A popular activity for students to partake in before games is tailgating. While tailgating is not prohibited, it is discouraged.

“We [had] some students that were assembled the other day for our home soccer game and Friday Night Lights. We don’t have a lot of parking, so when students use a lot of spots, it is an issue because we need those spots,” VanRheen said. “If, by chance, we see the students gathering and we’re not really sure what they’re doing, [our four officers] will call the Shawnee Police Department and look at what is going on.”

Despite all of the regulations, the administration enjoys the energy at games and wants it to continue.

“We want everybody to come out, have fun and enjoy the high school experience and the game,” VanRheen said.
