The girls tennis team had a home match Wednesday, Sept. 17 against Blue Valley Southwest. There were many matches going on at the same time as they filled up all the courts on the far right fields.
Sophomore Zoe Wendel is part of the varsity team and won her doubles match but lost her singles match.
“I won my doubles match. I’m pretty sure it was eight to six and then I lost my singles match, three to eight,” Wendel said.
Senior Bryn Foltz won her singles match but not her doubles match.
“I lost my doubles match with Clara [Budimlija] six, eight. Then I won my singles match, eight [to] four,” Foltz said.
Although Wendel lost her singles match, she found things she did well in both her doubles and singles match.
“Doubles went really well, me and my partner worked really well together. We communicated and we were playing smarter than we usually do. [We were] hitting it in better places and working on our placement and where we hit the ball,” Wendel said. “In my singles match, I wasn’t getting two in my head like I usually do. I was trying to just focus and stay calm about it.”
Foltz was in the zone for her matches and thought she played well overall.
“I was hitting the ball good, and I had a good mental mindset that day,” Foltz said
While Wendel found good things to say about her performance, she also found things that she plans to work on before her next match.
“I definitely need to work on my forehands, for sure, especially the deep forehands,” Wendel said. “I also want to work on making sure I get my second serve in [bounce] because I double faulted way too many times.”
In order to prepare for matches such as this one, Foltz has a ritual that she does before her matches.
“I always go to Quick Trip and get an electrolyte drink, and then I come home and I sit, or I go back to the school and sit in my car until it’s time to go,” Foltz said.
Wendel also has a ritual that she does throughout her day before a match.
“In the morning before I play, I make sure to have lots of protein, be eating healthy during the day and I make sure to drink a lot of water before my matches, because I want to stay hydrated,” Wendel said.
