Senior Night for the girls’ soccer team ended with a victory against Shawnee Mission North at Mill Valley High School on Thursday, April 24. They won with a commanding score of 8-1, with Shawnee Mission North getting a goal in the game’s last minutes.
Senior Calista Marx, who scored in the first minute, describes what it was like to score three goals by the end of the match.
“It felt very good scoring a hat trick, especially since it was Senior Night,” Marx said. “It was very exciting in particular to score in the first minute of the game; it got me and everyone else pumped up and ready to score more.
The game closed with high excitement. Senior Kate Martin reflects on the result.
“I thought the result of the game was perfect and shows how much we grow every day,” Martin said. “I’m so glad we got so many seniors to score for Senior Night, that was special to see.”
Sophomore Lyci Manirad recognizes how the seniors help everyone play to their best ability, describing them as the leaders of the team.
“The seniors, without a doubt, help a lot with our team culture. All of them were welcoming at the beginning of the season and made us all very comfortable,” Manirad said. “They are always so supportive and do a great job leading everyone on and off the field. They’re also experienced, so they always share their opinions to keep the team in check.”
Senior Night holds a special place in the hearts of graduating players. Martin describes what she will miss most about Mill Valley.
“I will miss the environment of Mill Valley the most, especially when it comes to playing sports here,” Martin said. “There are so many traditions and great people that make Mill Valley special, and I’ll miss that.”
Marx describes what it was like walking out in front of the crowd.
“Walking out with my parents and my sister was very surreal,” Marx said. “I felt accomplished because I played all four years of high school soccer, and I was very proud of my other senior teammates.”
Manirad believes the rest of the season will continue to elicit growth among the team.
“I think the rest of the season will look good because we are all collectively gaining confidence and flow,” Manirad said. “We are learning everyone’s playing styles and how to work with each other, which will help us for future games.”
