Throughout the year, sophomore Jessie Coleman has been singing and playing music in the Upper C locker bank with her friends before school starts. “I think my favorite part about being able to hangout there is being able to hangout with a lot of my friends that I don’t have classes with,” Coleman said. “We’re all so busy doing different things, it’s nice that we get to hangout in one spot in the morning before school.”

The locker banks serve as a creative outlet for Coleman, as well as a place to meet with her friends

To the average eye, the Upper C locker banks don’t seem like somewhere one would consider extravagant or special. However, if they went in the morning they would find sophomore Jessie Coleman and her friends doing a variety of things from playing the ukulele to laughing at jokes.

Sitting around a window, Coleman and her friends can be found hanging out and talking during the few minutes they have before the school day starts.

“Me and my friends hang out in the morning before school and I really like it because all of us are up there and our lockers are up there,” Coleman said. “It’s nice to see everyone there; plus I really like photography, so the sun coming in is what I look forward to.”

They take this time together to show each other things or discuss what is happening in their lives at the moment.

“We’re usually on our phones, showing each other pictures, or talking,” Coleman said. “We’re also probably laughing at something one of us said.”

Although the group can be found chatting with each other most days, the thing that makes the locker banks unique is that on occasion, certain people will bring a ukulele and begin to play.

“A lot of us play the ukulele or have one. It’s just a central location where people who wanted to play the ukulele could come and trade tips or have a duet,” said Coleman. “It was just one of those things where we were helping each other out, like with homework and things like that.”

One of Coleman’s friends, sophomore Josie Hayes, believes she has grown closer to Coleman because of the time they spent together in the locker banks.

“I don’t really have any classes with her, so it’s really the only time I get to see her throughout the day,” Hayes said.

Coleman agrees with Hayes and believes that because of the time they spend together in the morning, she has become much better friends with people she wasn’t previously close with.

“There were some people last year who I was semi-friends with and had a few classes with that I didn’t really talk to,” said Coleman. “They sit with us now and I’ve just become better friends with them.”
