Parking lot plan made public

Beginning on Jan. 5, 2016, the school will implement a new plan regarding student parking. Seniors and junior drivers will be issued parking permits which will allow them to park in any student-designated spot in either the Mill Valley or Monticello Trails Middle School parking lot.

Student drivers will not be assigned specific parking spots and the permits will be free. Students will be charged to replace lost permits, though. Permits can be transferred to different registered family vehicles when necessary, but are not transferrable from student to student.

Sophomore drivers will be entered in a lottery for the remaining parking spots. Freshmen are prohibited from driving to and parking at the school.

In order to obtain a parking permit, student drivers must provide the year, make, model, color and license plate number of their vehicles when applying. The school urges students not intending to drive to school on a regular basis to not apply for a permit. Although permits will be issued, parking is not guaranteed even to those with permits, as available spots are still limited.

Students will be issued a $5 ticket (which will increase by $5 increments with each offense) and asked to move their car for the following reasons, starting Monday, Oct. 26, for the following offenses:

  • parking in a handicap, staff or visitor spot
  • parking on a yellow or red curb
  • parking in the islands or grass

Additionally, students will be issued a ticket for parking without a valid parking permit beginning Jan. 5, 2016.

The plan will continue to be monitored by the administration and adjustments will be made as necessary.

New Board of Education member appointed

At a special meeting on Monday, Oct. 12, the Board of Education concluded a comprehensive interview process involving 10 applicants and appointed its newest member, Danielle Heikes. Heikes will serve the unexpired term left after former Board member Scott Hancock’s recall until the Board election in 2018.
