Junior Vicki Robinson prepares to dive in a race on Wednesday, March 23 at Shawnee Mission North.

Girls swim

Last year’s record: 10 individual qualifiers for state

Next meet: at Shawnee Mission Northwest on Monday, April 4

Coach’s perspective:

“I’m looking forward to seeing the sheer number that we have, and we’ve got so many swimmers that are different ranges. We have some that have been swimming their whole life, and we have some that never swam before. Just in the few short weeks we’ve been practicing, I’ve seen improvement on the entire spectrum, and I’m just excited for the season to see how much further that improvement goes.” —assistant coach Kelly Downard

New player’s perspective:

“I think it’s a new opportunity, since I haven’t [swam] in seven years, and I’m looking forward to making new friends along with getting fit. I think I’m doing OK so far, but I need to get more in shape and I’ll do better. Right now, I’m doing all right, so I just think we [as a team] need to continue in order to get better.” —freshman Laura Santos

Returning player’s perspective:

“I’m really excited to see how the team does. We have a lot of talent this year, got a lot of freshmen that are really good. I’m just very excited to see that. A lot of the state times are faster, so I’m curious to see whether or not we make them. I’m sure we will. It’s going to be exciting.” —junior Elaina Bartlow
