On Thursday, Nov. 10, students from the DECA club competed in individual and partnered categories for their second competition of the year.

Members new to the organization, like senior Garrison Fangman, were less nervous than their first competition of the year.

“Going into the first part of the role play, which would be the prep time, I was kind of nervous because I haven’t done this for a while,” Fangman said. “This was only my second competition, so I was a little nervous and I felt kind of rusty. Once I started writing, I had some ideas flowing and I felt a lot better about my roleplay. Which, when I finally got into I felt a lot more confident when talking to my judge, so I think it went a lot better than last time.”

Fangman also uses strategies that differ from other students.

“I read through the entirety of the prompt, some people just skip to the end to find the basic points of it, but I read through the entire thing. I really took my time to write down the intro and a summary to the issue they wanted me to solve,” Fangman said.

While Fangman was nervous due to lack of experience, DECA Vice President, Meghan Burke, felt confident.

“I felt pretty good going into the competition. Mainly because this is my second year doing it and also this is my second year doing the same event. I also felt good going into it based on the Blue Valley result because I got first,” Burke said.

Even though Burke is an experienced member, all DECA members, old and new, attended a goal-setting meeting.

“We had a meeting yesterday to talk about what our goals were; we always make goals before each competition to help each other reach our goals and get better each competition,” Burke said.

The next competition will be in February, more information to come.
