Day 3: Dinner at The Capital Grille

For my last KCRW experience of the year, I decided to eat The Capital Grille’s three course dinner

The Capital Grille, located in the iconic corner of the Country Club Plaza, is one of over 50 established across the nation. Though the restaurant opened back in 2001 at its original location on 4740 Jefferson St., the Capital Grille had moved to the new location in 2019. The Capital Grille is an upscale steakhouse that serves 18 to 24-day dry-aged steaks that are freshly cut by the restaurant’s butcher. The steaks are carefully prepared in order to optimize the freshness and tenderness of the meat, providing a high-end dish for customers.

As one of the participating restaurants in Kansas City Restaurant Week, the Capital Grille offers a lunch ($15) and dinner menu ($45) that offers a selection of different courses that come from their original menu. While the dinner menu serves a three-course meal, the lunch menu serves two courses.

First course: Field Greens Salad with Parmesan Vinaigrette (By Hannah Chern)

Course 1: Field Greens Salad with Parmesan Vinaigrette

Rating: 4.5/5

I decided to order the Field Green Salad with Parmesan Vinaigrette for my first course. The salad features fresh lettuce, cherry tomatoes, radish, and carrots tossed in a light amount of vinaigrette. The vinaigrette dressing pulled all components of the salad together and made it enjoyable. I wished there was more dressing on the salad I was given but the amount that I was served didn’t make the salad any less delicious. Overall, even though it was a fairly simple appetizer, the salad was a great way to start dinner.

Course 2: 8-Ounce Filet Mignon

Rating: 5/5

Second course: 8-Ounce Filet Mignon (By Hannah Chern)

The star of the dinner. For my main course, I chose the filet cooked medium, and I couldn’t have asked for anything better. While the 8-ounce filet was relatively small, I found that it was the perfect amount after eating a salad and the assortment of bread they offered. I usually order medium-well when it comes to steaks but this time I decided to order my filet as

medium. Everything about the filet was perfect. As I was cutting my first piece, I would tell that the texture was exactly what I wanted in a steak: slightly chewy but tender. The filet was cooked to exactly what I had ordered; I could see the hot pink center of a medium cooked filet. While the inside was very juicy and tender, what I loved most was how there were crispy parts on the outside that gave each piece flavor. The filet was only lightly seasoned, yet the taste of each bite made me savor each moment.

The filet is served with two sides: Sam’s Mashed Potatoes and Creamed Spinach. (By Hannah Chern)

In addition to the filet, my dinner was accompanied by two sides: Sam’s Mashed Potatoes and Creamed Spinach. First, the mashed potatoes had a rich and creamy flavor that was unique to The Capital Grille. The texture of the mashed potato was smooth, but I enjoyed that the texture that came from the potato skins; I personally like it when there are potato skins. Next, the creamed spinach was something that I never expected I would be eating. At first, I was a little hesitant on trying, but after eating a forkful, I found myself scooping more portions onto my plate. The taste of the creamy spinach wasn’t as heavy as I was expecting it to be, making it a suitable side for the filet. Overall, the two sides were the perfect addition to the filet; the taste of each complemented the main dish well.

Course 3: Chef’s Selection of Housemade Desserts (I chose the cheesecake)

Rating: 4/5

Third course: Chef’s Selection of Housemade Desserts (cheesecake) (By Hannah Chern)

While the menu didn’t list the specific dessert that was being served that night, the waitress informed me that I could choose the flourless chocolate cake or the cheesecake, so I went with the cheesecake. By the time my cheesecake arrived, I was already full. However, the cheesecake was very small, so it was the perfect portion to end off my dinner on a sweet note. I am normally not a big fan of cheesecake, but I enjoyed this dish because there wasn’t a strong “cheese” taste that I usually find overbearing in other cakes. Furthermore, I enjoyed the taste of the crumbly crust because its sweetness complemented the sourness of the berries and strawberry sauce that the cake came in. Altogether, this small dessert was filled with a lot of enjoyable bites that were the perfect way to end my dinner.

Overall Rating: 5/5

Overall, I felt that $45 for a three-course dinner at The Capital Grille was worth it. Every course that I had was unique and delicious. From the first course to the last, I enjoyed everything that I was eating. Furthermore, the service was fast and efficient, cutting down the wait time when I was waiting for my food; I spent just a little over an hour in then I was out. Lastly, I believed that The Capital Grille staff did an applaudable job at ensuring safety by implementing safety measures such as social distance. From the point I entered the doors, I didn’t have to worry too much about there being too many people because it was clear that the capacity was reduced ahead of time. Inside, the table I sat as far away from others. Altogether, my time at The Capital Grille was a memorable one.
