Blog: The next big name in EDM

First it was David Guetta, then Calvin Harris, then Swedish House Mafia, then Zedd and then Avicii. In the past few years, there have been many electronic dance music (EDM) superstars who went from playing sets at small nightclubs to playing at music festivals like Ultra and taking over the radio. Now, it looks like there is yet another name to add to this list.

Martin Garrix, an EDM artist from the Netherlands, has recently received considerable radio play for his song “Animals.” Already a top 10 hit in many countries, the song has also been well received in the U.S., and for good reason.

The song was clearly well-produced, with beats slowly layering on top of one another to form a cohesive sound. When this layering culminates, Garrix then adds a percussion riff which he uses as the song’s drop (essentially the “chorus” of an EDM song). This, coupled with his multiple uses of the same beats, gives the song a rather interesting minimalistic sound. The most unique aspect of the song, though, is the fact that it’s an instrumental. Never before has an EDM song with no words succeeded in the U.S. the way “Animals” has, and in that respect, Garrix is a pioneer.

I definitely hope to hear more from Garrix. While no plans for an album have been publicized, he has released a few other songs. My personal favorites are “Wizard” and “Error 404,” both collaborations with fellow EDM artist Jay Hardway. Needless to say, if Garrix continues to make music like “Animals,” he will become as big of a name as the other EDM legends.
