Blog: Second issue a huge improvement

Austin speaking:

Today was a special day. And by that I mean that issue two arrived. My excitement for issue one was overwhelming, but I was much more excited for issue two, knowing how much of an improvement it would be. All of the little kinks from issue one were resolved, our new staffers were more comfortable with how things worked and our abilities as a staff seemed to have grown tremendously since we finished the first issue. Man, oh man, was I looking forward to the delivery man rolling in the huge stacks of freshly printed ink on newsprint. Us three editors did a lot of double checking to make sure everything was as good as it could be before we sent the issue to the printing press, and based on how well I thought it came together, I could hardly sleep (but that may be due, in part, to my homework load that kept me up until early hours of the morning). Putting together a newspaper is never an easy task, as I have obviously learned, but we managed to get through another issue and I’m happy with the results.

Kristina speaking:

Monday long worknight was probably one of the more stressful worknights I have ever experienced. Everyone was still trying to get the hang of deadlines, so some of the pages weren’t completely finished. On top of everything, we hadn’t sold enough advertisements for the paper so we were faced with the decision of  cutting pages. After seeing the quality of the stories, this became a tough decision. We decided to involve the entire staff to help decide what will be printed in the paper. After debating for hours on what pages to cut, we finalized the issue and sent it to the press. In the end, I believe our 16-page paper showcased the talents of the staff. When we received the paper this morning, I was totally overjoyed with the outcome. Our hard work had paid off and the issue looked great.

Hanna speaking:

First of all, we need to sell more ads. As much as I loved our second issue, I think the whole staff is upset when we end up cutting four pages that they put a lot of work into. Second, on a more positive note, I was pleasantly surprised with how well this issue ended up. It was clear this week that in the middle of worknight, when not everything’s going exactly as planned, it’s easy to overlook the things that are going well. We got so caught up in the pages and the stories that were having trouble that we didn’t see the ones that were really strong. So, moving forward, we need to make sure the staff members that are putting a lot of effort into this publication are given the recognition they deserve and, oh yeah, sell ads.
