Volleyball heads to state tournament
After a 25-23 victory over Topeka Seaman, the girls volleyball team will be headed to state this weekend for the first time since 2003. On Saturday Oct. 20, the volleyball team traveled to Leavenworth High School to play in the Sub-State tournament. After winning the first game against Washington, the team advanced to play against Topeka Seaman. It was a back and forth battle between the two teams.
“It’s an experience I have never had before. It was the greatest feeling of my life so far,” senior libero Molly Miller said.
With both teams putting up a fight, the score was inching closer and closer. It came down to the final four points. The crowd went wild and the intensity continued to build. With the score 24-23, junior outside hitter Molly Oshinski spiked the ball for the game winning point.
“At first, it didn’t seem real. I was overly excited,” senior libero Molly Kelley said.
The team hugged each other and after shaking hands with the other team, the girls celebrated their Sub-State victory on the court and the student section rushed the court and congratulates the team on their victor
“It made me realize how good our team is and how far we could make it,” Kelley said.
For the only two seniors on the team, it makes for a bittersweet end to their last year of high school volleyball.
“Since it’s my senior year, I want to finish off strong,” Kelley said.
Hoping to take home a state title, Miller and Kelley seem optimistic.
“I’m excited to see what happens,” Miller said. “I’m really proud of my team. I hope everyone gets the chance to experience something like this.”
Join the team on their trip to state this weekend in Topeka. They will be playing Friday at 4:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. If they win two of the three matches, they will be playing at 2 p.m. Saturday.
