Piece of Cake: Tous Le Jour

Almost everyone has their own little heaven on Earth, and of course, for me that place just so happens to be a bakery. Now, if you ask the girls on staff with me, they’ll tell you that I don’t actually enjoy sweets that much. In most cases, that’s true, since I tend to try my products so much when I make them that I kind of get too used to the taste and it becomes not so appealing anymore.

But when it comes to Tous Le Jour, no one can hold me or my wallet back. So, in the absence of time to bake anything this weekend, I decided to drop by the little bakery off 103rd St. and Metcalf for some weekend treats. For $22, this is what I bought.

Chocolate Croissant

Just like a good croissant should be, every layer is perfectly separated and flaky. The chocolate piped through the dough is extremely smooth and bitter, just prominent enough to counteract the sweetness of the pastry and create a sense of complete euphoria when you eat it. That’s not an overreaction either — it’s amazing.

Apple Pie

It sure doesn’t look like pie, or an apple on that topic. But, somehow, the crisscross of pastry dough on top of apple filling is just tempting enough to lure in anyone with a sweet tooth. Like, completely. It’s incredibly sweet, but not overbearingly so, since the little bit of tart from the apple is just enough to keep you coming back.

Sesame Donut

This wasn’t my favorite, but it was still amazing. A little piece of fried, sugar-coated dough that’s soft and just a little chewy is the perfect snack. However, it is hollow and it doesn’t keep very well since moisture just sucks up into the dough. But, in the end, it’s one of my top choices.

All the Macaroons

I have literally tried every flavor of macaroon Tous Le Jour offers, and they are all flawless. My favorites, however, are the peanut butter and jelly and the pistachio. The peanut butter and jelly macaroon is filled with — you guessed it — peanut butter and strawberry jelly, with two strawberry flavored macaroon cookies rolled in crushed peanuts. The pistachio, on the other hand, has two vanilla cookies filled with a pistachio cream that melts in your mouth. They’re to die for.
Of course, there’s a countless number of other products offered here, but these just happen to be the ones I picked up over the weekend. If you guys get the chance to go by, let me know what you get and how it was by tweeting at me. Until next time, fellow foodies.
