The boys tennis team placed second at regionals on Saturday, May 7, at Lansing High School. Six team members, including two singles and two doubles teams, competed in the tournament.

Sophomore Dante Peterson, juniors Alec Bergeron, Andrew Bock, and Jansen McCabe along with senior Tyler Shurley all competed in regionals.

Junior Parking Billings placed third and junior Jansen McCabe came in fourth in singles.

McCabe said, despite the team’s overall success, he as an individual had some difficulties during the tournament.

“My most difficult match was during the semifinals against [a player] for St. James,” McCabe said. “I beat him earlier in the season, but I didn’t play that well yesterday and ended up losing to him.”

Juniors Alec Bergeron and Andrew Bock, who compete as doubles partners, had more success. The duo finished first place in doubles after competing against four teams. Junior Alec Beurgon enjoyed coming out victorious.

“It felt great,” Bergeron said. “We were working for it all season and knew we had the chance to do it.”

Bergeron also looks forward to the remainder of the season as state approaches.

“Me and my partner are trying to make a run for the state title this year,” Bergeron said. “I am really looking forward to that. State will be a lot of fun for all of us going.”

Bock shares the same goals, but believes that the main component for their success will be to avoid distraction.

“State is so fun, but we have to stay focused,” Bock said. “We have the experience, and we feel that we are good enough, we feel like now is our time to win.”

The team will compete at state on Friday, May 13, at Maize South High School in Wichita.
